Derek Dooley Fired as UT Head Coach

Derek Dooley fired

The Derek Dooley era at the University of Tennessee is officially over. The announcement is expected to come in a 2:00 press conference. Few would argue that last night’s loss was one of the worst in Volunteer history. That team just quit last night. And Dooley looked like a defeated man on the sidelines. He looked worse, still, on The Derek Dooley Show this morning. Telling, I thought, that he wasn’t wearing a tie nor the Tennessee pin which he’d taken to wearing. Evidence, perhaps, that he had already been informed of the decision.

Where will the Vols go from here? The longer the Gruden thing sticks around, the more I think it’s possible. Though the media has all acknowledged that they’ve heard from credible sources that the Vols are, indeed, in contact with Gruden, most remain skeptical that a deal will be reached.

Oddly, it’s their very skepticism that has me thinking there’s a chance. What do you think? Will Jon Gruden be the next Vols head coach? Would you want him to be? Who do you think the Vols will hire?

More on this story as it unfolds.

The Grumers have more traction than was the case the last two times we were recently searching for a head coach. Bob Stupes is probably second in line if he can be lured this way, and Gary Patterson and Al Golden might be contacted with offers. Mike Gundy could be a good fit. I think a current head coach (not a coordinator) is the safest bet, and at this point we need a proven winner…no more room for experimentation in trying to give a potential “up and comer” a shot. If it is Gruden, we will know the Sunday after Kentucky. If it is a standing college head coach, I think we will know the Sunday following conference championships. This has been in the works for some time now I think.

i agree w/ everything you said except that “if gruden, we’ll know the sunday after ky.” b.c of financials being off, i could see it taking a while to meet wherever the “middle” winds up being. also, his ESPN contractual obligations may compel both sides to wait till after the holiday season… but i’m onboard 100% w/ your sentiments, NKV. all those coaches would be good ones and we certainly need someone with experience.

I heard Gruden’s cousin was getting some Stormin Norman’s iced tea down there at the Vol market #3 this afternoon about 1:15, so it’s a done deal.
